Four windows of different sizes. They belong to four different rooms: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living. They look onto the same view: a mews-courtyard type arrangement of little houses, backing onto the tall flats of the main road behind.

Three of the windows let in sunlight first thing in the morning, when it comes from a suitable angle to creep in over our little-house and tall-flat neighbours, through the corner of the courtyard. At this time of year – when spring has kicked into full gear – the bathroom window gets 5 minutes. Kitchen window gets 15. Living room gets 30.

The living room is where we go to wake up. My fiancée lies on the floor where the sun is, while I sit on the sofa or armchair amusedly. Even before all this, she always complained how little sun there was in England. Now our little morning ritual is all she has. This is the highlight of our day. By 10 AM, the sunshine has left us.

The kitchen is where we go to relax. Cooking is the only creative outlet we have left in our current mindset. Food gives us back the instincts that we have lost in other areas of our lives. Where to go, who to talk to, what career move to make next – these decisions seem suspended, all of a sudden, in mid air. They can be looked at but not touched. The only question left is what to have for dinner.

The bathroom is where we talk. One of us on the toilet, one of us brushing our teeth, we roll our days back and forth between us, tie them up in conversations, while our eyes check lovingly over plants on the windowsill. The plants, at least, are doing OK.

The bedroom is where we sleep. We do a puzzle every night before we close our eyes. One puzzle takes about 10 minutes – a manageable portion of problem. We fill them in, night by night, until the book is finished and we need to order a new one. We drift off.

It’s been four weeks since they told us we shouldn’t go outside. Four weeks of these four windows, these four rooms, this one view. We’re lucky we have this many. We’re jealous we don’t have more. We wonder how many more weeks we have to stay here. We try to keep moving between the windows.

This is my world for the time being. Four windows of different sizes.
